Agree the records, not just the appearance of the code

Build a traceability map before filling

Check the code on the actual package
Review a representative coded bottle and carton. Confirm the location is readable, that print does not obscure mandatory text and that staff can distinguish a lot reference from a product barcode. Agree any durability check relevant to handling and the intended package. Do not invent production or expiry dates on artwork before the coding rules are approved.
Run a small retrieval exercise
Before launch, choose one sample record and ask the parties to trace it in both directions: back to the agreed production evidence and forward to the planned shipment. Record any gaps. This is a practical readiness exercise, not a certification or a guarantee that a recall will never be needed.
A mixed order deserves particular attention. Different products can have different manufacturing dates and lots. The buyer should avoid collapsing all incoming units into one warehouse entry that removes this distinction. Assign responsibility for preserving the supplier references when stock is repacked or split for ecommerce fulfillment.
Prepare the complaint intake
Request the product name, legible lot photograph, order reference, issue description, storage history and relevant images. Separate a dispensing complaint from a possible animal adverse event. If an animal may be unwell, local veterinary attention takes priority over the commercial investigation. Agree who receives the report and how records are secured and shared.

Is a retail barcode the same as a batch code?
Usually they serve different purposes. A product identifier alone does not identify the particular production lot; clarify the system used for your order.
Does each bottle need a unique serial number?
Do not assume this is necessary or included. Agree the traceability level based on the market, channel and project requirements.
Can the factory promise a fixed investigation time?
Agree communication expectations and escalation contacts. The time needed to reach a supported conclusion depends on the issue, evidence and any testing.
